According to a UBS Group AG analysis, the global robo-taxi market might be worth over $2 trillion per year by 2030. A May 2019 Detroit News article describes a UBS Evidence Lab simulation highlighting that a robot-taxi fleet in New York would “optimize routes and riders’ connections with vehicles, along with metrics like running costs, utilization rates, margins and charging station network size.” The $2 trillion figure includes revenues from producing the vehicles, providing the electricity, building the charging stations and componentry such as semiconductors used as part of the technology. It seems like the transportation as a service arms race has already begun with companies like Uber, Lyft, GM, VW, Tesla, Alphabet and others all striving to grab a piece of that $2 trillion pie.
