Tech Crunch is reporting that Waymo is informing customers in the Phoenix area that use the Waymo One self-driving taxi service that “completely driverless cars are on the way.” What this means is that Waymo will start using full autonomous vehicles without a human safety driver behind the wheel in some instances. This will be an early milestone in the development and potential consumer acceptance of autonomous transportation as a service. Waymo has been gradually integrating its capabilities beginning with the “early rider program” initially in Phoenix to full commercial deployment of Waymo One in the area.
