The CEO of CDK Global Inc, Brian Krzanich, doesn’t believe autonomous vehicles will eliminate the need for automotive dealers. Automotive News is reporting (subscription required) that Krzanich recently told dealers during a conference that people will continue to own and drive cars once self-driving cars are adopted in-mass. He believes the role of the dealer will change dramatically, particularly as it relates to the type of service and technician expertise that will be required for the service of autonomous cars. Yet, how might the retail environment of being a dealer change? Will consumers actually buy significantly fewer vehicles in a self-driving car future where mobility services proliferate? Several studies are predicting this. Maybe the two-car family only needs one vehicle when much of their commuting needs can be covered with on-demand, ride-sharing services. And in that environment, will the current quantity of dealers be required to fulfill fewer consumer needs for vehicle ownership?
