Elon Musk has been quoted that he doesn’t believe traditional automakers will beat Tesla in the development of autonomous electric vehicles because the solution is mostly a software problem. He believes traditional auto is not very good at software. In a recent Clean Technica article, Alex Voigt makes a compelling case that automotive engineering managers who have never written any software code are not qualified to lead the development of electric vehicles for their automaker companies. He believes this is the reason that traditional automotive thus far has delivered underwhelming electric vehicles. Voigt believes top engineering managers should be a software coder at the start of his or her career.
