General Motors is bringing Amazon Alexa to the infotainment system of its vehicles next year. This was announced during the Amazon Devices event this week. Alexa will be added via over-the-air updates on model year vehicles of 2018 and newer. This Alexa announcement follows the announcement two weeks ago that Android will be the infotainment operating system for GM vehicles beginning ins 2021. It seems that Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Alphabet continue have success driving imbedded in-vehicle deployment with automakers. Is this an admission by automakers that Silicon Valley is better at in-vehicle infotainment and operating systems? And who wins? Since this is presumable better for customers, maybe automakers and Silicon Valley are both winners. But who owns the customer at the time she’s engaged with Amazon content while driving a Chevy?
