Earlier this week, the Mobileye CEO cast doubts on Elon Musk’s approach to developing self-driving vehicles. Today, the CEO of Google’s Waymo self-driving division chimed-in as well. John Krafcik asserts that Tesla is only developing a very good driver assistance system that will never develop into a full autonomous driving system capability. There’s a lot at stake for Elon Musk. Many Tesla owners have spent upwards of $10,000 for an FSD vehicle option that promises a future of full-self-driving capability. Musk’s timeline for this feature to be complete has been pushed back repeatedly. I’ve always found it hard to believe why any Tesla buyer would pay $10,000 for a feature like FSD only to become a beta tester used for that feature’s development.
