According to an article written by Steve LeVine at Medium, Tesla may have invented the million mile battery. Based on patents filed by Tesla and an academic paper co-authored by a respected battery researcher (Jeff Dahn) on contract with Tesla, other top battery researchers are saying the technology seems “convincing.” Consumers probably don’t care about a battery lasting a million miles for vehicles they purchase. However, operators of electric vehicle fleets would certainly desire long battery life cycles. For Tesla, the million mile battery is important for Musk’s assertion that owners of Model 3 vehicles soon will be able to connect their car to an autonomous taxi network to be part of Tesla’s autonomous vehicle taxi service.
