Today, there are 48,000 UAW GM employees on a labor strike against the automaker in the United States. Business Insider is suggesting that GM’s investments in developing EVs are exacerbating the labor dispute. Through June of this year, GM only sold approximately 8,200 all-electric Chevy Bolt vehicles this year. This compares to 255,000 Chevy Silverado pickup trucks. Why would the UAW be concerned about EVs which only make up a small percentage of overall GM sales? It’s clear that General Motors (and other automakers) are investing in a future portfolio of vehicles that are fully electric. As was described in a prior TaaS Master posting, the production of electric vehicles might only require one-tenth the number of employees to produce. The Business Insider article points to a German Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO study that showed a shift to EVs by 2030 could result in 75,000 fewer jobs related to engine and transmission production even after factoring in the 25,000 jobs created by electric vehicle production.
Is the UAW (United Auto Workers) on Strike Against General Motors Because of Electric Vehicles?
