In a recent AutoNews article (subscription required), Porsche’s head of R&D says Tesla’s goal to be a volume producer of EVs means Tesla really doesn’t compete with Porsche. I’m not buying it! Taycan is Porsche’s first and best attempt at creating a proper Porsche that just happens to be an EV as described in a prior post. In many ways it seems like Porsche has succeeded. But make no mistake. Every EV that Porsche produces will be measured in some way against a Tesla EV, particularly as Tesla introduces more types of EV models like the upcoming Roadster. The press will make these comparisons. And Porsche customer prospects will make some kind of comparison as well. Tesla has established itself as the first global auto company that made EVs a real alternative to IC cars. EVs from automakers like Porsche will be judged against what Tesla has done irrespective of any narrow definitions of which companies make a proper competitor.
