I’m not referring to the company getting better with time. I’m not even referring to this year’s manufactured Tesla vehicle being better than last year’s produced car. Tesla cars – no matter when they’re purchased – get better over time due to the company’s ability to deploy over-the-air software updates. As a non-Tesla owner, this has been almost completely under-appreciated by me. During Tesla’s last earnings call, Elon Musk stated that current Tesla owners will get more range and performance capabilities via software update soon. Musk said, “I don’t think there’s ever been a situation in history where you buy a car and it gets way better over time just through the software. Not a little bit better, but a lot.” He’s correct. I own a 2014, non-Tesla, ICE luxury vehicle that I really enjoy driving. But it’s performance today is essentially the same performance capability when purchased new five years ago. Many traditional auto industry types like me fail to appreciate some of the “surprise and delight” features of Tesla vehicles that Tesla owners realize are better than the previous vehicle ownership world they came from.
