According to Drago Anguelov, Waymo’s principal scientist and head of research, Waymo is making available its autonomous driving data for the purposes of research. This Open Data Set ostensibly is to be used for research purposes. However, this also includes research at other companies. Waymo’s license agreement highlights that “non-commercial purposes” means that the data set is not to be used for commercial advantage or monetary compensation. Waymo states that the data set is among the largest and most diverse ever released for research. The data includes 1,000 driving segments done by autonomous vehicles, with each segment representing 20 seconds of continuous driving. The data is collected from Waymo’s lidar devices and cameras which provide 360-degree views in high resolution. Might GM Cruise or Tesla or Argo AI access this data? And who might have the lead in autonomous driving data?
