On the heels of the General Motors – Nikola partnership announcement, today we learn that GM has developed a wireless battery management system that’s a “first in any EV anywhere,” according to IEEE Spectrum. Not even tech-forward Tesla has this technology. Instead of using extensive wiring to connect battery modules to an on-board management system, GM has developed RF antenna technology on circuit boards that reports back battery data wirelessly. The benefits of this system are many, but include cradle-to-grave monitoring of battery health with an ability to reprogram battery nodes with over-the-air updates. This wireless approach also eliminates about three meters of wiring per vehicle. In addition to weight savings, this wireless system allows for more batteries to be placed into a given space with a lower profile design.
