A few weeks ago, I wrote that the Porsche Taycan seems to be a “best effort car by an auto company determined to lead.” Dan Neil of the Wall Street Journal seems to agree. The difference between Dan and me, however, is he has now driven the all-electric Taycan, and has written about the experience in the WSJ (subscription required). What’s interesting about Dan’s article is not only his detailed description about the experience of driving the Taycan, but also how that experience convinces him that the “internal-combustion [engine] is doomed.” While many people reflexively fall into a “which is better camp” (the Taycan or Tesla’s Model S), Dan also believes the Taycan is a significantly better car than Porsche’s own Panamera. And as Dan states in the WSJ article, “EVs are better vehicles – superior mechanisms, richer and more desirable consumer experiences.” It seems that this Porsche validates the EV vehicle technology that Tesla has been trying to make mainstream. Taycan seems to fit all of the vehicle attributes of being a proper Porsche. It just happens to be an EV as well.
